WorldGBC outlines key positions on sustainable building policies for successful outcomes for COP29

Buildings surround us. Yet, when planning the future, they seem to be easy to overlook. The majority of countries still lack sustainable building codes. Some don’t even mention the building and construction sector in their climate plans. While many more have committed only to superficial change. Without strong, policy-backed action on this highly emitting part of the economy, #BuildingTheTransition to a 1.5°C-aligned world will simply be impossible. That’s why, at COP29, we’re calling on governments to #BeBoldOnBuildings. As we enter the 2025 update cycle for climate action plans (#NDCs), the World Green Building Council and Green Building Council network are asking nations to level up their commitments, actions and policies. And turn buildings from a part of the problem… into the solutions they must urgently become. Have a look at our video.

The World Green Building Council and the global Green Building Council network have released a briefing paper ahead of the UN Climate Conference COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, outlining successful outcomes for negotiations from a building sector perspective.

Currently the built environment is not on track to halve emissions by 2030 and reach Net Zero by 2050. Buildings account for nearly 40% of global energy related emissions and half of all extracted materials (GlobalABC, 2024).

Despite this, the sector holds immense potential for climate action, but we do not have enough policy ambition to address the urgency of climate change. You can read the briefing paper here.

You can find the key events during COP29 which WorldGBC, Green Building Councils and partners will be involved in on the WGBC event calendar.
